A way to keep warm in the winter...

Every month, we highlight one mystery on our Party of the Month link on our murder mystery message board. This is December's winner!
** Keep in mind, even if we don't pick you the month you submit, you will be re-entered into the contest until you DO get picked! **

The last weekend in August was the perfect time to hold my end-of-summer murder mystery party. It's the second one I've done and everybody had a blast. I told each person to really get into their character. And they sure did. One female guest came up with a full on back story where she was nine-months pregnant. Halfway through the party, she gave birth to twins!

I had a over twenty people and bought the add-on pack as well. I cast my sixteen-year-old cousin as the busboy, Gilligan. It was fun coming up with names for the characters in the add-on pack.

The party was in the backyard, poolside. We had a bar set up, along with a tattoo station. Lifesaving Sam (with some help from Sandy Beach bum) even tried to surf in the pool. Didn't work out too well, but was funny nonetheless. I also had a bocce ball tournament going, with random partners, to get everybody mingling even more.

The prize voting was split every which way at the end of the night. So many people got votes for best dressed and best performance.

We had two people actually solve the case. I had the murder victim become the cop solving their own murder halfway through to keep them involved.

The next day I started getting emails asking when the next one was going to be. I had a few people at the party that I didn't know and they were so thrilled to have been invited. They couldn't stop talking about it! Fun times all around!

Martha Stewart Has Nothing On Her.

Every month, we highlight one mystery on our Party of the Month link on our murder mystery message board. This is November's winner!

My name is Jenn, I'm writing for my friend/boss Rose who is known for her parties, I mean really, Martha Stewart has nothing on her. For our murder mystery party we chose Murder Among the Mateys.

It was AMAZING! We had so much fun!!! Rose decorated her entire home, and transformed it to feel like the Salty Sea Dog Inn.

Everyone got really into costuming and acting the part. The game is done so well that it was easy for even the shyest person to play along.

We had a party of 21, because we were on person over, I made up my own character (the mermaid) and became the "m.c." for the evening.

We found this worked nicely if anyone needed a little extra coaching or if some of the "speaking roles" weren't a comfortable in front of everyone. The party began as I greeted everyone at the door with the first envelope and a shot of tequila, to get everyone warmed up and feeling "pirate". Then all the guests had time to meet and greet during cocktail hour which was filled with sushi, oysters, shrimp, with a signature cocktail, Hurricanes, fitting for any pirate. Beer and sake were served the entire night.

Dinner began with a first coarse of clam chowder and rustic breads. For the main coarse we enjoyed a whole salmon, rotisserie chickens, a lentil salad, fingerling potatoes, and grilled vegetables. We were stuffed (needless to say) but not too stuffed to find that killer and scarf down some delicious rum cake, a favorite dessert of any pirate!

I was very pleased only 3 people guessed who the killer was, and everyone was so sure of who they has accused! We'll recommend Night of Mystery Party Games to anyone looking to throw a rockin' party. We're already planning our next murder mystery for New Years Eve. We'll be throwing a 1920's shindig Murder at the Juice Joint!

Party Planning - Creating Backdrops!

One way to make a memorable night is to have a backdrop where your guests can create their own memories! Whether it is serious, elegant or just plain old fun, creating a backdrop for your guests to pose by will help enhance photo opportunities and provide you with many more ways to remember the night!

A few suggestions:
  • Pick a place where there will be good lighting.
  • You can make it as elaborate or simple as you want.
  • Accessories and decorations can make the difference. Have some extra props on hand that your guests can pose with.
  • An easy way to create a background is to use a "scene setter". These affordable rolls of images  transform your room instantly and make for a good backdrop to your picture.
  • Make sure there is enough room to fit everyone in to the frame.
  • For individual shots of guests, designate someone to be in charge of pictures as your guests arrive.
    • Consider your character list and which character would fit the role of taking the picture. Ie, if you want mug shots, perhaps ask the police chief to be in charge of taking the pictures.
  • For a group picture, take one just before the introduction is read or right after the solution is read (before people may start heading out).
    • These are two times when you can count on everyone being around and attentive.

Here are some pictures from customers who have created great backdrops and, thus, lifetime memories!
Try taking "mug shots" for your mystery theme. It is a great way to capture everyone in their costume.

Simple props can add a lot!

Glamming it up on the runway.
A "scene setter" was used here.
Sometimes you just have to pick a good spot with good lighting!

This highly crafted backdrop is one we still can't get over!

Party of the Month October 2011

Every month, we highlight one mystery on our Party of the Month link on our murder mystery message board. This is October's winner!

"One chilly night in October, we were all gathered together for a pre Halloween celebration. We wanted something different, something exciting, and thrilling and boy did we find it.
The Juice Joint was established in my parent’s basement, but this speakeasy proved to be anything but baloney.

With a secret knock at the hidden door underneath the illuminated “Juice Joint” sign, each guest arrived donning their perfectly characteristic fashions.

We began the night with mug shots and of course we made sure that our bouncer frisked everyone at the door.

Next came the carefully crafted menu divided into act.
We nibbled on everything from Great Gatsby’s Greek salad, Cotton Club Crab stuffed mushrooms to Bees Knees Banana Pudding . As the hostess of the mostess, I, Rosie Marie, began introducing the plot. As my guests at the Juice Joint began partaking in the booze in the bathtub and hooch, the enthusiasm pursued. One after the other mystery envelope opened and we all began unraveling the caper with the clues and exhibits. We shared laughs, suspicions, and some unforeseen acting chops. The night was climaxed with a bang, as the shot rang out created by a blank in a gun. The victim lay there as each guest began putting together the clues. The mystery was revealed and the party continued with group photos, more libations, a lesson in the Charleston, and of course speak of undying interest in doing this again as soon as possible. "
